Note from our Parish Nurse –   Fall 2022

A God-loving man blames no one else, for he knows that he sins- and this is a sign of the soul on the way to salvation.

 – Elder Thaddeus of Vitonica

Pray all are well and enjoying our beautiful New England autumn. The colors have been magnificent. Truly, Glory be to God!

Although this time of year is the time we begin to prepare for our New England winters. One important way to prepare and stay healthy is to build up our immunity. Some common sense ways are

Get a good night’s sleep

It is a key immunity helper, because when you’re sleeping, your body produces cytokine proteins that direct immune cells to fight inflammation.

Eat Healthy Foods

Good nutrition is another way to keep inflammation in check and stay healthy. Eating a plant based diet or foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals, high in fiber and that are minimally processed is good for your immune system!   Fruits, vegetables, nuts and oats –all excellent foods to incorporate in the Nativity Fast as well as daily living!

Manage Stress

Another important challenge is building our immunity and reducing stress. Stress can have a negative effect on our immune system.  Too much stress has even been shown to decrease white blood cells(lymphocytes) which help fight off infection.

Prayer is one of the best ways to alleviate stress. Cast thy care upon the Lord, and He will nourish thee; He will never permit the righteous to be shaken. Psalm 54:25

We have our blessed and holy Orthodoxy to guide us through these turbulent and stressful times. We have prayer and our faith to always remind us that this world is temporary, and we are always under our Holy Mother’s protection through our Lord’s love and guidance.

Excercise

Another important way to develop our immune system is to exercise.  Build up to incorporating an exercise regimen to develop good habits. Prayer can accompany exercise too.

If you find you are mostly sitting throughout the day, try to increase your movement by getting up and stretching Taking short walks to begin with and gradually increase them in length and intensity.

Stay connected with family and friends

Another important immunity builder is social connections. Laughing and chatting tells the brain you’re safe and helps you avoid the flight or fight response which adds to stress and anxiety.  Taking walks and enjoying the outdoors together to combine the benefits!

Manage your healthcare

Another important line of defense is staying up to date on your vaccinations and stopping by during our monthly Blood Pressure clinics during coffee hour.

Pray you enjoy this beautiful fall and as always if you notice any change in your health please see your healthcare provider.
